In law, the principle that a person cannot be
prosecuted twice for the same offence. It is
contained in the Fifth Amendment of the US
Constitution. In British law a defendant can
plead `autrefois convict' if he or she has
already been convicted of the same offence
(or `autrefois acquit' in the case of a
previous acquittal).
